1. There was confusion in Owerri, the Imo State capital on Monday as gunmen suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) enforced the sit-at-home order. The gunmen, who stormed streets and markets in Owerri, forced traders to close shops.
2. Facebook and its Instagram and WhatsApp platforms were hit by a massive outage Monday, impacting potentially tens of millions of users globally. Tracker Downdetector was showing outages in heavily populated areas like Washington and Paris, with problems being reported from around 1545 GMT. The issue was, however, rectified a few hours later.
3. President Muhammadu Buhari has called for peace and stability in Ethiopia, amid the many challenges facing the East African country. The President made the call on Monday in his goodwill message in Addis Ababa at the inauguration ceremony of the Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for a second-five year term in office.
4. Former Governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau, has said that the 17 Southern Governors should stop “ganging up” and “issuing threats” to get the 2023 Presidential slot. Shekarau, who represents Kano Central District in the Senate, stated this on Monday during an interview.
5. Ikeja Electric Plc on Monday announced an eight-week power outage in some areas in Lagos State. This is to enable the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) re-conduct its 132KV lines to boost electricity for Nigerians.
6. The Ohanaeze Ndigbo has alleged that the deployment of Golden Down to the South East was a way of using the military to manipulate the Anambra election in favour of the APC. It warned the military to steer clear of politics and remain neutral in its operations.
7. The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors on Monday knocked the governments of Abia, Imo, Ekiti and Ondo States for owing its members salary arrears of 21, six, five and three months respectively. The association’s President, Dr Dare Ishaya, bemoaned the plights of resident doctors in the affected states at a press conference in Abuja during which he announced the decision of NARD to suspend its strike that commenced on August 2.
8. Nigeria spent N1.47tn on debt servicing payments in the first half of 2021, data obtained from the Debt Management Office have shown. In the first quarter of the year, the country had spent N1.02tn on both domestic and external debt servicing, while a total of N445.45bn was spent in the second quarter of 2021.
9. The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) has rejected the recent call by IPOB on the Middle Belt region to join its sit-at-home campaign, calling on governors to seal shops that are being closed in solidarity with IPOB. In a statement signed by the group’s national president, Alhaji Yerima Shettima, the group said the North had come a long way in understanding the use of constitutional and democratic means of channelling legitimate grievances, and cannot, therefore, be party to any undemocratic move.
10. The BRACED Governors’ Council also known as South-South Governors’ Forum said it has approved a joint regional security outfit which would be floated soon. Chairman of the Forum and Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa said this was part of the resolution reached at the end of their meeting held at Government House, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
