The University of Ibadan, 1948 which is the premier
University in Nigeria has achieved another great feat as it emerges the best in
Nigeria according to new rating by Journals Consortium. This entailed the
ranking of African universities and higher institutions numbering 1,447 higher
institutions.
Research publications, citations and strength on the
internet over the last 4 years, specifically from 2010 ot 2014 were used basis
for the recent rating. In Africa, UI was the eight best university, in a ranking
largely dominated by South African institutions which occupied six of the first
best 10 institutions list.
The results of the ranking which is available on the WEB indicated that South African institutions
dominate the top 10 with University of Cape Town topping the rank with a Total
Influence Factor (TIF) of 45.02, followed by Cairo University (43.43) and the
University of Pretoria (43.35).
South Africa greatly impressed by providing 6 Universities
that dominated the top 10 universities. Two others reportedly came from Egypt
and Kenya while University of Ibadan occupied the only remaining slot for
Nigeria.
First generation universities were in top positions in the
latest ranking with University of Ibadan coming eighth and first in Nigeria
followed by University of Nigeria (13th), Ahmadu Bello University (18th),
University of Lagos (UNILAG-20th), Obafemi Awolowo University (24th),
University of Ilorin (31st), University of Port Harcourt (36th), Nnamdi Azikiwe
University (42nd), University of Calabar (43rd), Federal University of
Technology (FUTA, 49th) while the only private university in the top list is
Covenant University which is placed 53rd in the ranking.
The Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Professor Isaac
Folorunsho Adewole reacting to this enviable achievement reaffirmed the dream
of the University to be a force to be reckoned with globally through the
delivery of the best educational services.
