It Is Indeed True That Romantic Proposals Take Thought and Effort - and this policeman went to a lot of trouble to surprise his girlfriend. He actually spray-painted a huge message on a wall in his town, reading: "Ashley, will you marry me?"

Driving his other half there in his cop car, he pulls out a ring and gets down on one knee in front of his handiwork. She then adds to the wall by spray-painting 'yes' in huge letters in answer to his offer.

The whole act might be generally cute but not everyone thinks the policeman should have done what he did. The video, posted to the Gainesville Police Department's Facebook page, prompted viewers to slam the police officer for spray painting - and saying he should arrest himself.

Gabriel Lopez commented:
"How come if he spray paints he can get away with it? He should arrest himself"
Ashley Vaquez added:
"Congrats. But i bet if a regular guy on the street was doing. The same thing they will be sent to jail for sray painting On the wall. He should be arrested" (sic)
Apparently not. The police department hit back by saying that the spray paint was done on The 34th Street Wall - famous for its graffiti.

Although it's technically illegal and classed as vandalism, local police departments in the town in Florida have never charged anyone for painting on the wall.
