President Muhammadu Buhari presented a speech encapsulating government's realistic engagement with socio-economic issues in the last one year since the administration commenced its Programme of Redemption.
The speech was rendered with reassuring freshness which rekindles hope. The simplicity of rendition and the uncharacteristic candour of the president was a clear departure from the usual drool and drab of the immediate past.
Nigerians, including the incurable cynics, agree that this administration has been able to confront the menace of the insurgents headlong. Boko Haram is almost becoming history. Normalcy is being restored gradually to the North East. The hope that the resettlement of displaced persons to their homelands will commence soon is very real.
This administration inherited a near-empty treasury from the immediate past administration. The profligacy of the ousted ruling party is legendary. Revelations of brazen acts of malfeasance is mind-boggling. Many honest citizens agree that the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari at the polls saved the country from the brink. Beyond the easy expectation of immediate but deceptive change in the polity, this government has displayed sufficient ingenuity in its grasp of the intricate nuances of the socio-economic challenges. It is striving strenuously to redirect the itinerary from assured misery and deprivation, made possible by a mono-economic structure which promotes unbridled consumption, to the path of real growth and consequent development.
This government leaves no one in doubt as regards its readiness to combat corruption. This president's exemplary courage to confront this hope-wrecking menace is yielding positive dividends. Beyond the arrest and trial of suspects, the disposition of the government against all acts which draw back the wheel of progress, remains a constant reminder to all and sundry that the era of recklessness is gone.
At this juncture in our journey to recovery and nationhood, all good people must encourage Nigerians to be patient with this administration as it settles to fix the badly battered economy. The pain currently experienced by the downtrodden is real. It is the necessary sacrifice for future development. This is the time to join hands with the government to rebuild the country. Nigerians must possess the process of governance progressively.
This president has the capacity and the will to turn things around positively. Let us all support this government to make our nation great.
