Portuguese team celebrating Eder's goal
Without their most popular player in active form, Portugal still finally won the Euro 2016 final in a fierce match. Cristiano Ronaldo lasted only 25 minutes and although France dominated for most of the game they could not find a goal, and the sucker punch came in the 109th minute through Eder’s fine long-range strike.
The first chance of the game tumbled to Portugal, as Nani dashed onto a long ball over the top from Cedric in the fifth moment. Portugal had reason for concern when Ronaldo and Dimitri Payet crashed on the midway line in the ninth moment.
Ronaldo had kept on looking in uneasiness in the wake of misery the thump to his knee, and he sank to the ground again in tears in the seventeenth moment. He was off the field for three minutes before jogging back into the action to jeers from the home crowd.
The football took centre stage again as Sissoko had another shot deflected over after a bursting run through the midfield. Ronaldo’s game was finally over in the 25th minute when he again slumped to the ground and the captain’s armband was passed to Nani.
Despite losing the talisman Cristiano Ronaldo in the 25th minute of the first half due to injury, and also looking as if they were happy to settle for spot-kicks from around an hour into the game, Portugal found a way to win in extra time.
Eder turns out to be the unlikely hero. The substitute rifling who came in in 79th minute of the game was able to spin one for the Portuguese in the 109th minute, leaving the French in almost dispair.
Twelve years after losing in their last appearance in a major final they have finally got their hands on a trophy.
