1. As the nation marked its 61st independence anniversary on Friday, some protesters, with placards bearing ‘Buhari Must Go’, trooped to the streets of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, to show their grievances over the state of the nation. Also, in some parts of the South-East, the sit-at-home order by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra witnessed considerable compliance as residents stayed indoors.
2. There has been tension in Munya Local Government Area of Niger State, as villagers around Sarkin Pawa Ward vacated their homes following the invasion of three villages by bandits where no fewer than 30 persons were reportedly killed while seven women were kidnapped. The Secretary to the State Government, Ahmed Ibrahim Matane confirmed the attack on the three villages.
3. Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi, former Emir of Kano, has said zoning may leave Nigeria with two “useless presidential candidates” in 2023. Speaking during an interview, Sanusi said he has always been opposed to the idea of rotational presidency.
4.PDP yesterday, said the admission by President Muhammadu Buhari in his Independence Anniversary speech that Nigerians have faced difficulties that are similar to the situation of the civil war under his administration vindicates its stand that his government is incompetent, confused and the worst in the history of our country. The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan spoke on Friday.
5. The Governor of Kano State, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has charged his counterparts to avoid unnecessary tussles. Speaking at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano, during the occasion to commemorate independence, Ganduje called on the Nigeria’s Governors Forum ( NGF) to avoid unnecessary tussles and work together to serve the purpose why they were elected.
6. President Muhammadu Buhari has said since the return to democracy in Nigeria in 1999, no government can beat the efforts of his administration in terms of putting Nigeria back on track. In his Independence Day broadcast yesterday, Buhari said it was unfortunate that critics misdiagnose the progress of his administration as stagnation.
7. The Nigerian Air Force has said it is still searching for its Alpha fighter jet, marked NAF 475, which went missing about six months ago. The aircraft was reported missing after losing radar contact with the air force base in Maiduguri, the Borno State Capital on March 31, 2021. The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Isiaka Amao, at a virtual interaction with select editors yesterday, added that the Air Force was working with its foreign partners to locate the aircraft.
8. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Sector Command, says road accidents claimed 137 lives in the past nine months. The sector commander, Mr Samuel Ochi, told newsmen on Friday in Abuja that 738 accidents occurred in the FCT from January to September.
9. The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Youth wing, has called on the leadership of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, to redeem itself from the reports of the attacks in the Igboland by disbanding the Eastern Security Network, ESN, an armed group of the IPOB. The acting National Leader of the Ohanaeze Youth wing, Jones Onwuasonya, spoke in Owerri on Friday.
10. The Nigerian Ambassador to the State of Qatar, Amb. Yakubu Ahmed, has said that Nigeria is the pride of the black race. The envoy made this known in a statement by the Nigerian Embassy in Doha, Qatar and made available to journalists in Abuja on Friday.
